Stretch marks. by Vigdis Tange Andersen

What is a stretch mark? A stretch mark is depression the streaks the skin and is caused by tears in the elasticity of the skin tissues. They may be pink, reddish brown, very dark brown, or in between colors. The colors of stretch marks depend on the color of the skin. Usually they will fade with time, but not totally disappear. Woman or men with darker skin, it is harder to tell and it may appear very faint.

Anyone can get stretch marks and even men. Woman and men will get stretch marks when they gain or lose weight quickly. The more you gain and lose the more marks that will probably show on your body. All woman get stretch marks during a pregnancy. It happens usually in the later stages because the belly is more rapidly growing. Some woman will get stretch marks on their hips, thighs, abdomen, back, and buttocks. Because the mother's breasts will swell during pregnancy, it is common to get stretch marks around the bust area.

Everyone can get stretch marks. Sometimes it is from the loss or extreme gain of weight. It all depends on how elastic your skin is. Your elasticity lies in the genes. If your mother or sister has stretch marks caused from a pregnancy or other reasons, it is most likely that you will too. The reason why pregnant woman get stretch marks are because of the weight gain, carrying more than one child, or you have excess amniotic fluid.

There is nothing that you can do to prevent stretch marks. Some tips to prevent stretch marks during a pregnancy are to keep your skin moisturized, gain only the recommended amount of weight, and try to gain the weight slowly. Although they will fade, stretch marks take away that smooth feeling of the skin. It is best to try to prevent them during a pregnancy, but there's not much you can do.

A laser can remove stretch marks, but this can be costly and is considered cosmetic surgery. If your stretch marks bother you, you may want to talk to a dermatologist and ask if there is any creams that will help them fade more quickly. A dermatologist cannot help the texture of skin that is caused by the stretch marks.

Stretch marks can be embarrassing, but everyone will get some at some point in their lives. It's only natural for humans to gain and lose weight so stretch marks seem only cosmetic surgery too. As long as the skin is kept moisturized, the skin shouldn't develop stretch marks. However, there is not guarantee that they won't appear. There is really nothing anyone can do to prevent stretch marks and they are on the body for life, though they will fade to be hardly noticeable.
